The ones that are tonight, whatever the hour

Four situations. In all of them the cost of waiting climbs faster than the cost of the call out.

Water you cannot stop. A burst line, a split supply hose, a fitting that has let go. If the main valve will not close or you cannot find it, that is a call now, and we will talk you through the meter while we are on our way.

Sewage coming back into the house. Not a slow drain: waste appearing at a floor drain, a shower or a toilet that rises when another fixture is used. That is a main line problem and every further use of water makes it worse.

Any smell of gas. Leave, then call the gas utility from outside, then call us. This one is not a plumbing decision and it does not wait for daylight.

No water at all in the house. Especially in a freeze, and especially with children or someone unwell at home. It is also how you find out a line has split somewhere you have not looked yet.

The ones that can wait until the morning

These are genuinely unpleasant and none of them are getting worse fast. Waiting saves you the out of hours rate.

One blocked fixture when the house has another. A blocked toilet with a second bathroom available is a morning job. Stop using that fixture and leave it alone rather than pouring chemicals at it overnight.

A drip you can catch in a bucket. Shut the isolating valve under the fixture if there is one, put a container under it and get some sleep. Note where the water is coming from while it is still dripping.

No hot water. Uncomfortable, not urgent, unless the tank itself is leaking. If you can see water on the floor around the heater, that changes it into the first list.

A running toilet or a weeping tap. Turn off the stop behind the fixture and deal with it tomorrow. The waste is real but it is measured in dollars, not in damage.

Anything you have already shut off successfully. Once the water is isolated and nothing is running, the emergency is over. What remains is a repair, and repairs are cheaper in daylight with the parts van properly stocked.

How a call plays out

Call and describe it. If it can wait we will say so, tell you what to isolate tonight and book you in for the morning. Nobody is sent out at two in the morning to earn a premium on a dripping tap.
