About this serviceDallas-Fort Worth
A bathroom remodel is the only plumbing job most people commission on purpose, and it is the one where decisions made in the wrong order cost the most. Nearly every expensive surprise in a Sunnyvale bathroom project traces back to something that could have been established with an hour of investigation before the first tile was ordered.

The layout you can have is decided by things that are currently invisible, and finding them is cheap.
Know where the drains and vents run. The waste line and the vent stack dictate what can move and how far. A basin can travel further than a toilet, and a toilet is limited by fall and by where the stack is.
Establish what the pipe is made of. Galvanised supply, cast iron waste or polybutylene all change the scope, because opening a wall on ageing pipe is the moment to replace it rather than tile over it.
Slab or crawl space changes everything. On a slab, moving a toilet means cutting concrete. Over a crawl space or a pier and beam house, the same move is a morning's work. That single fact should shape the design.
Check the venting arrangement honestly. Older bathrooms were often vented in ways that would not pass today, and a remodel is when that gets corrected rather than extended.
An exploratory hour beats a change order. Opening a small access panel and looking, before the design is fixed, is the cheapest money in the whole project.
Ask what the bathroom above or below is doing. Stacked bathrooms share stacks and branches, so a remodel in one frequently affects the other, and work that interrupts a shared line needs both households considered. In a two storey house that is the detail most often discovered mid demolition.
Some decisions are trivially easy before the walls close and effectively impossible afterwards.
Pick the shower valve before it is roughed in. The valve body goes in the wall, and trim has to match it. Choosing a brand and model late, or changing it after tiling, means opening finished work.

Decide about pressure balancing and thermostatic control. A thermostatic valve holds temperature when another fixture is used and costs more. It is a comfort decision with a price, and it has to be made at rough in.
Curbless showers are a drainage design, not a style. A level entry shower needs the floor recessed or built up, the slope set correctly and often a linear drain. It is entirely achievable and it is decided structurally, before anything is finished.
Put blocking in for what you might add later. Grab bars, a bench, a niche, a hand shower. Blocking behind the board costs almost nothing now and requires demolition later.
Match the drain to the fixture. Freestanding tubs, wall hung basins and wet room trays all have specific drain and supply positions, so the fixture has to be chosen before the rough in, not after.
Ventilation is part of the plumbing conversation. An extractor that actually moves air to the outside is what protects the work you are paying for.
Confirm water supply capacity for what you are fitting. A large rain head plus body sprays can ask for more flow than the existing supply delivers, and the result is a beautiful shower that disappoints. That arithmetic belongs in the design stage, not the first morning it is used.
Sequence is what keeps a project on schedule, and a homeowner who understands it makes better decisions under pressure.
Fixtures on site before rough in. Roughing to a fixture you have not received means guessing at dimensions, and guesses are what get discovered at final fit.
Rough in, then inspect, then close the walls. Anything that needs signing off happens while it is visible. Closing up first and correcting later is the expensive path.
Pressure test before tile. Supply lines tested and drains checked while everything is accessible. A leak found at this stage costs an hour; the same leak found after tiling costs the tiling.
Expect the bathroom to be out of use for longer than the plumbing takes. Tile, grout and curing set the calendar. The plumbing days are a small part of the total, and knowing that upfront prevents a great deal of frustration.
Agree how water will be shut off and when. Whole house isolation for a known window, rather than a surprise, is what lets the rest of the household function.
Keep a record of what went in the walls. Photographs of the rough in, before board, are worth having for the rest of the time you own the house.
Decide who owns the finish schedule. On most remodels the plumbing sits between demolition and tile, and delays in either push the plumbing dates without anyone deciding to. Agreeing who sequences the trades prevents a week of everyone waiting politely.
The phone is answered around the clock, holidays included. For a remodel, it helps to know whether the house is on a slab, whether you are moving the toilet, and whether fixtures have been chosen. Those three answers determine most of the scope.

FAQ
It depends on the foundation and the stack. Over a crawl space it is usually straightforward; on a slab it means cutting concrete and re-establishing fall, which is a significantly bigger job.
The shower valve, the fixtures themselves, whether the shower is curbless, and where any blocking is needed. All of those are trivial now and require opening finished work later.
Usually, yes, but it is a structural and drainage decision rather than a finish. The floor has to be recessed or built up, the slope set properly, and often a linear drain used.
It is a comfort choice. A thermostatic valve holds temperature when another fixture draws water, and it costs more. What matters is deciding before rough in, because the valve body is in the wall.
For known windows during rough in and final connection, agreed in advance. A remodel should not mean unpredictable outages, and a plumber who cannot tell you when is not planning the work.
Because roughing in to a fixture nobody has seen means guessing at drain and supply positions. Those guesses get discovered at final fit, when correcting them is expensive.
That is the moment to replace it. The wall is open, access is free, and tiling over ageing supply pipe means paying for the same demolition again when it fails.
Longer than the plumbing takes. Tile, grout and curing set the schedule, and the plumbing days are only a part of it. Ask for the whole sequence up front rather than just the plumbing dates.
