Why it changes twice a year

A reservoir stratifies through the summer and then turns over when the surface cools, mixing what has been sitting at the bottom back through the whole body of water. Algae blooms do something similar on their own schedule. Both release compounds that the human nose can detect at concentrations far below anything that matters to health, which is the frustrating part: the water is tested, it is fine, and it still tastes like a pond.

Treatment plants deal with it with carbon and oxidants, and mostly they win. In the weeks around a turnover they are chasing a moving target, and what reaches the tap is water that is safe and unpleasant at the same time.

It matters that the cause is at the source, because it tells you where the fix has to go. Nothing in your house created it, and nothing in your house is failing.

Telling the supply apart from the house

Two checks settle it in five minutes. First, is it every cold tap or just one? A whole-house change is the supply. One tap is that tap, usually its aerator or a filter cartridge nobody has changed.

Second, is it hot only? An odour that appears only on the hot side is a water heater question, not a lake one, and it is usually the anode reacting with the water rather than anything in the supply.

A smell that arrives only after the water has stood overnight, and clears within a few seconds of running, is coming from the pipe rather than the reservoir. So is anything that appears at one fixture in one room and nowhere else.

What actually helps, and what we do

For taste and odour at the source, carbon is the answer: an under sink cartridge filter if you only care about drinking water, a whole house unit if you want it at every tap. Both need their cartridges changed on a schedule rather than when someone remembers, because spent carbon stops working quietly and then becomes the problem itself.

We fit and service both, and we will tell you honestly when the cheaper option is the right one. A household that only objects to the taste of its coffee does not need a whole house system.

One thing worth knowing before you spend anything: the season ends. If the taste arrived in the same fortnight it arrived last year, it will fade the same way. Buy filtration because you want better water all the time, not in a bad week when any purchase feels justified.
