Faucet and Fixture Installation
Fitting what you bought, and keeping it serviceable.
About this serviceGreater San Antonio
Most fixtures are bought on looks and price, which is why so many of them are back on our repair list inside five years. The parts that decide whether a tap is still working in 2040 are the ones you cannot see in the box, and they are easy enough to ask about.

Two taps that look identical on a shelf can have completely different working lives, and the difference is the cartridge.
Ceramic disc cartridges outlast rubber washers comfortably. Two polished discs sliding against each other, with no soft part to perish. On hard water they can still scale, but they do not simply wear out the way a washer does.
Brass bodies beat plastic ones. A plastic bodied tap is lighter in the hand and cheaper for a reason. It is also the one that cracks at the threads when someone overtightens a connection.
Ask whether parts will exist in ten years. The single best predictor of a long lived fixture is a manufacturer that still sells cartridges for models from a decade ago. A tap you cannot get a cartridge for is a tap you replace whole.
Weight tells you a surprising amount. In a showroom, pick two up. The heavier one usually has more brass in it and fewer plastic internals.
Medina County water is hard, and hard water is unkind to the parts of a fixture people spend the most on.
Scale attacks aerators and spray heads first. Both unscrew, both soak clean in vinegar, and both are cheap to replace. A tap that has gone weak is far more often scaled than faulty.
Chrome is the most forgiving finish. It tolerates descaling and ordinary cleaning better than brushed and matt finishes, which mark with acid cleaners and cannot always be restored.
Matt black and brushed gold are a maintenance choice. They look excellent and they show every water spot in a hard water house. That is a decision worth making with open eyes rather than discovering.
Touchless and digital features add failure points. Sensors, solenoids and batteries. They are genuinely useful in a commercial washroom. In a family kitchen they are one more thing that stops working while the tap itself is fine.
Pressure balance and thermostatic shower valves are worth the money. This is the one place where spending more buys real function rather than appearance, because it stops the shower going cold or scalding when a tap runs elsewhere.
If you are choosing fixtures, send us the model numbers before you buy. Telling you that the parts for something are already obsolete takes us two minutes and saves a replacement later.
Devine, Lytle, Natalia and the surrounding parts of Medina County are on our regular run. We fit what you have bought without complaint, we will tell you honestly when a tap is scaled rather than worn out, and we keep cartridges for the common families on the van.
FAQ
Sometimes. What you are paying for should be a brass body, a ceramic disc cartridge and parts availability. If the extra money is buying a finish and a brand, it will not last any longer.
Usually not. Unscrew the aerator and soak it in vinegar. On hard water a scaled aerator is by far the most common cause of poor flow at a single tap.
Chrome. It tolerates descaling and ordinary cleaning better than matt or brushed finishes, which mark easily and are difficult to restore once acid cleaners have been used on them.
They earn their place in a commercial washroom. At home they add sensors, a solenoid and batteries, which are extra things to fail on a tap that would otherwise be simple.
A pressure balance or thermostatic shower valve. It is the only common fixture upgrade that buys real function, because it stops the shower running cold or scalding when water is used elsewhere.
Ask whether the manufacturer still sells cartridges for models from ten years ago. Brands that do tend to keep doing it, and a fixture you cannot get a cartridge for is one you replace entirely.
