A dog wash in the garage is one of the most requested small jobs we do out here, and one of the easiest to get wrong. It is a shower with a much harder life: hair, mud, a hose that gets pointed anywhere, and a user who shakes.

Where it goes, and where the water goes

The location is decided by the drain, not by the space. A garage or mud room on a slab has no waste line in it unless somebody put one there, and adding one means cutting concrete and reaching an existing drain with a workable fall.

That is why the practical spots are nearly always the same: against the wall shared with a bathroom or laundry, or in a laundry itself where a standpipe and trap already exist. Both keep the concrete work short.

It needs a trap, and it needs a vent. A wash basin tied into a laundry standpipe without either will gurgle, drain slowly and let drain smell into a room you have to walk through, which defeats the purpose.

Falls matter more than usual because of the volume. A wash is several minutes of continuous water, closer to a shower than a sink, and the branch should be sized and sloped for that rather than for the occasional bucket.

Hair is the whole problem

Dog hair behaves differently from human hair. It is shorter, there is more of it, and it comes with mud and sand that give it something to bind to. A standard basket strainer passes most of it straight into the pipe, where it collects on the first rough surface and starts catching everything else.

The fix is to catch it at the basin and make the catch easy to empty, because a filter that requires tools gets removed within a month. A deep removable strainer that lifts out and goes in the bin is worth more than any product poured down afterwards.

Rinse the basin properly after each wash rather than letting sludge sit in the trap, and avoid enzymatic and chemical drain products as a routine. They do very little to a hair mat and, on a septic system, the harsher ones do harm.

On septic, the sand and grit deserve their own thought. A muddy dog puts real solids into a system that has no business receiving them, and over years that shortens the interval between pump-outs. A strainer at the basin is the cheapest protection a septic tank can be given.

Fittings, temperature and how we work

Use a valve with a temperature limit set deliberately. A dog gets scalded faster than a person complains, and a mixing valve set at the wall removes the risk without anyone having to think about it during a wash.

A hand shower on a long hose beats a fixed head, a lever tap beats knobs when your hands are full of dog, and a bracket to hang the shower on saves it being dropped every time. In an unheated garage, remember the whole assembly is now plumbing in a space that gets cold, so it needs isolating and draining for a hard freeze or protecting properly.

We build these in a day in most houses, and we do them in Marion, Cibolo, Santa Clara, McQueeney and the surrounding Guadalupe County area.

FAQ

Dog washes and pet plumbing in Marion

Only where a drain can reach it with proper fall. In practice that means near a wall shared with a bathroom or laundry, unless you are prepared to cut a long run across the slab.

Often yes, if it is sized and vented for the extra load. A long wash is closer to a shower than a sink, so the branch needs to handle continuous flow rather than a quick fill.

Catch it at the basin with a deep strainer that lifts out for emptying. Anything that needs tools stops being used, and once hair is in the pipe it binds with the mud and grit that came with it.

Not as a routine, and not on a hair mat, which they barely touch. On a septic system some products do more harm than good. Physical catching and rinsing works better.

The grit and sand from a muddy dog are the real concern rather than the water. A good strainer keeps most of it out, and it is worth mentioning the wash to whoever pumps your tank so the interval can be adjusted.

Fit a mixing valve with a temperature limit set at the wall rather than relying on whoever is holding the shower. Dogs react to hot water far faster than people adjust it.
