Drain Cleaning
Gurgling fixtures that turn out to be the vent.
About this serviceDallas-Fort Worth
After a bad hail season the roofs get replaced across whole streets, and a small share of those houses develop drain problems a few months later. The cause is usually up on the roof, in the pipes nobody thinks of as plumbing.

Every plumbing vent leaves the house through the roof, and each one has a collar or boot sealing the gap where it passes through. Those collars are the part that fails: the rubber perishes in sun and cracks under hail, and once it splits the leak appears as a stain on a ceiling nowhere near a bathroom.
Severe hail can also split the vent pipe itself, particularly older plastic that has spent twenty summers in the sun and gone brittle. A cracked vent above the roof line will not flood anything, and it will let water into the attic and give birds and wasps a way in.
Any mesh or cap fitted over a vent gets flattened, and a crushed cap restricts the airflow the vent exists to provide.
This is the more common source of trouble, and it is rarely malicious. A vent gets cut shorter to suit a new layer, sealed over with mastic that partly blocks it, covered by a new valley or a solar panel, or disturbed at the point where it passes through the deck so that the pipe below is no longer supported.
The symptoms arrive later and look like a drainage fault: gurgling fixtures, traps emptying themselves, a bathroom that smells after somebody runs a bath. Those are the signature of a restricted or blocked vent rather than of a blocked drain, and rodding the drain will not touch them.
The timing is the clue. Where a house developed gurgling drains in the months after a roof was replaced, look up before looking down. It is a short check and the fix is usually small.
Solar installations deserve the same scrutiny, since panel layouts are planned around the roof plane rather than around what sticks out of it, and a vent terminating under a panel is not venting to open air.
If you are having a roof replaced, ask for the plumbing vents to be reflashed rather than reused, and ask that nothing be cut down. Both are reasonable requests and neither costs much at the time.
Where damage is part of a storm claim, plumbing vents and their flashings belong in the scope alongside the shingles, and photographs before the work help if a problem surfaces later.
We check and repair vents, replace cracked pipe above the roof line, clear obstructions, and where a vent has been cut short or covered we put it right. We also camera the drains where symptoms suggest something else is going on, because a gurgling fixture is not always the roof.
Boyd, Rhome, Paradise, Newark and Decatur are all a short run for us.
FAQ
Very often. A vent cut shorter, sealed over or covered during roofing restricts the airflow the drainage depends on, and gurgling fixtures and emptying traps are the result rather than a blockage.
Yes, particularly older plastic that has gone brittle in the sun. It will not flood anything, and it lets water into the attic and gives wasps and birds a way in.
Possibly the vent flashing rather than a pipe. The collar sealing a vent where it passes through the roof perishes and cracks, and the water it admits appears wherever it runs to.
Reflash the vents rather than reuse old collars, and leave the pipes at their existing height. Both are reasonable, inexpensive at the time, and prevent the problems that turn up months later.
It belongs in the scope alongside the roof itself where it was damaged in the same event. Photographs before the repair make that considerably easier to establish.
It can. Panel layouts are planned around the roof plane, and a vent terminating under or beside a panel may no longer discharge to open air. Worth checking after any installation.
