A standby generator is an electrical purchase that turns into a gas problem. The electrician sizes the machine and sets the transfer switch. Somebody still has to prove the house can feed it, and in Wylie that is usually the part nobody priced.

A standby generator is usually the biggest gas appliance on the lot

Since the freeze of February 2021, a lot of Wylie houses have gained a generator on a concrete pad beside the garage. The electrical work gets the attention. The gas side is where these jobs go wrong, because the generator is not a modest addition at the end of the existing pipe.

A gas meter and its pipework on the wall of a house. Everything downstream of it is the owner's to size, run and prove.

Add up what the house already burns. Furnace, water heater, range, dryer, and on plenty of lots out here a pool heater or an outdoor kitchen as well. Write down the input rating stamped on each one. Then add the generator. A common air cooled standby unit can want roughly as much gas as that entire list put together.

The number that matters is the worst moment, not the average day. The generator runs when the power is out, which around here means a January night or a summer storm. On the January version the furnace is running, the water heater is recovering, and the generator is at full load. Sizing to anything gentler than that is sizing to a scenario you will not get.

The existing pipe was sized for the original list. Builders size gas piping for the appliances on the plan with very little margin. That is not a defect, it is normal practice. It does mean a later addition of this size almost always needs something changed: a larger meter, a larger trunk, a dedicated run, or all three.

Ask for the load calculation in writing before you sign the generator quote. A quote that covers the machine, the pad, the transfer switch and twenty feet of flexible connector has not answered the only question that decides whether the thing works in an outage. If nobody can show you the arithmetic, it has not been done.

Upsizing the meter belongs to the utility, and it has a lead time

Everything on the street side of the meter is the gas utility's property and nobody else may touch it. Everything after it is yours, and that is where we work.

If the load calculation exceeds the meter, the utility has to change it. That is an application, not a phone call, and it is scheduled against their workload rather than your installation date. Weeks is normal. Starting that request early is the single thing that keeps a generator project on programme.

A larger meter sometimes arrives with a different delivery pressure. Some upgrades come as an elevated pressure service with a regulator at the house, which allows smaller pipe for the same load over a long run. It is a good answer on a deep lot. It also changes what the house-side pipework has to be, so it is a decision to make before anyone buys materials.

Plan the order of work. Load calculation, utility application, house-side pipe, pressure test, inspection, then the generator commissioning. Run in that order and the electrician turns up to a job that is ready. Run it backwards and you own a very expensive ornament while a meter request sits in a queue.

Diameter is set by the distance, not by the fitting on the machine

The most common fault we find on a generator that will not hold load is a correctly installed pipe of entirely the wrong size, chosen by matching the threaded inlet on the generator itself.

Gas loses pressure over length. Two houses with the same generator need different pipe if one pad is eight feet from the meter and the other is seventy feet away down the side of the lot. The calculation takes the load, the length, the number of fittings and the allowable drop. The inlet size on the machine is not part of it.

Material matters less than how it is finished. Black iron and corrugated stainless both do this job. Corrugated tubing has to be bonded and protected where it passes through structure, and it cannot be buried without the right sleeve or jacket. Under a drive it goes in a sleeve, full stop.

Give the pad its own isolation valve and a sediment trap. A valve at the generator lets it be serviced without shutting gas to the house, and a trap keeps scale and debris out of a machine with small orifices. Both are cheap at first fit and irritating to add later.

Flexible connectors are for the last few inches. They absorb the generator's vibration. They are not a way to make up a length of the run, and a connector doing structural work is a defect an inspector will find.

Prove it under load before you rely on it

An installation that has never been tested against a real load is an assumption. The failure mode is specific and worth knowing: the generator starts, runs fine for a minute, then faults or drops out when a large load joins.

Pressure test and inspect the house-side work. This is permitted work in Wylie, the test is straightforward, and the certificate is what you want in your file when the house eventually sells.

Exercise it with the house working. Not the weekly no-load self test the machine does on its own. Kill the utility supply deliberately on a cold morning with the furnace calling, the water heater recovering and the oven on, and watch what happens. That is the scenario you bought it for.

Learn the symptom. Gas starvation shows up as a machine that runs unloaded and stumbles under load, sometimes with the furnace short cycling at the same moment. It reads like an electrical fault and gets diagnosed as one, repeatedly, until somebody measures pressure at the generator inlet while it is running.

How a call plays out

Tell us the generator model and roughly how far the pad sits from the meter, and we can usually say on the phone whether this is a straightforward run or a meter conversation.

Wylie, Sachse, Murphy and the rest of Collin County are on our daily route. We do the load calculation first and give it to you in writing, we deal with the utility application rather than leaving it with you, and we pressure test and get the work inspected before anyone commissions the machine.

FAQ

Generator and gas supply questions from Wylie

Sometimes, on a smaller unit in a house with few gas appliances. More often it cannot, and the only way to know is to add the input ratings of everything you own to the generator's demand and compare that with the meter's capacity.

We do, as part of the job. It is an application with a lead time measured in weeks, so we submit it as soon as the load calculation is signed off rather than waiting for install week.

It is common, and worth reading closely. Check whether the price includes a load calculation, a meter change if one is needed, and the permit. A flat allowance for a short run usually means none of those were assumed.

Further than most people expect, as long as the pipe grows with the distance. Seventy feet is entirely workable on the right diameter. The mistake is running the distance on the size that fits the generator's inlet.

No. They size the electrical side and set the transfer switch. Sizing and running the fuel supply is our work, and the two trades need to agree a date rather than each assuming the other has gone first.

Yes. The house-side gas alteration is permitted and inspected work, and it includes a pressure test. Keep the paperwork, because it is one of the things a buyer's inspector will ask about later.

Only if the trunk was sized for both running together, which on most lots it was not. Two large seasonal loads on one undersized run is the classic way to get a generator that faults every time something else fires.

That is the signature of an undersized supply. Both appliances draw at once, inlet pressure at the generator drops below its minimum, and it protects itself. Measuring pressure at the inlet under load settles it in minutes.

Substantially, yes. A tankless unit is another large intermittent load, and adding it after the generator calculation means redoing the calculation. Tell us about anything planned, even loosely, before we size the system.

Propane is the usual answer, with a tank sized for the runtime you want rather than the smallest one that fits the pad. It changes regulation and orifice details, so it needs to be decided before the generator is ordered, not after.
