Plumbers in Commerce, Texas

Once a year your supplier publishes a water quality report, and almost nobody reads past the first page. It is worth ten minutes, because it answers most of the questions people pay us to answer, and it also has three notable gaps that it will never tell you about itself.

What the report actually tells you

The report covers what is regulated. For each substance it lists what was detected, the average and the range, and the limit it is measured against. If everything sits below its limit, the water met the standard for that year, and that is a real statement rather than a formality.

Two entries are worth finding every time. The disinfectant, because whether your supplier uses free chlorine or chloramine changes what a filter has to do. And the disinfection byproducts, because they tell you something about how much organic material the source water carries, which is a good predictor of seasonal taste complaints.

Read the ranges rather than the averages. An average sits comfortably below a limit while the high end of the range tells you what the water was like in the worst month, and that month is the one people notice.

What it leaves out

Hardness. Not a health concern, so not regulated, so frequently not in the report at all. It is also the single number that decides whether your water heater lasts, whether the dishwasher leaves film, and whether a softener is worth fitting. Suppliers will usually tell you if you ask; otherwise a test kit costs very little.

Your own plumbing. Sampling happens in the distribution system and at a set of representative taps. What happens between the main and your kitchen is yours: old galvanised pipe, a water heater that has not been flushed in a decade, a filter cartridge that expired two years ago. A clean report and unpleasant water at one tap are entirely compatible.

Anything nobody tested for. The report covers the regulated list. That is a long list and a sensible one, but it is not everything, and a private well two miles away is not covered at all.

Turning the numbers into decisions

If the disinfectant is chloramine, a carbon filter sized for chlorine will not do the same job, and that matters most for anyone keeping fish and for anyone with a treatment or medical need. Specify for what is actually used.

If hardness is high, the decision is between living with it and fitting a softener, and that is a cost question rather than a health one. Water heater life, appliance life and soap use all sit on one side; running cost, salt and the taste of softened water on the other.

If the report is clean and your water still bothers you, the problem is in the house or it is aesthetic. Those are the two categories we spend most of our time on, and they are both fixable once you have stopped looking for a fault that is not there.

Student housing is worth a specific note here, because so much of it in this town sits empty through the summer. Water that has stood in a building's pipes for three months is not what the report describes, and the first thing any returning household should do is flush every fixture properly before drinking or cooking.

How we work here

Bring us the report, or the link to it, and we will read it with you and say plainly what it does and does not justify spending money on. Quite often the answer is a cartridge filter at one tap and nothing else.

We will also tell you when the answer is nothing at all. A report inside its limits, water that tastes fine and a household with no specific need does not require treatment, and a surprising number of people have been sold a system on the strength of a free test performed by whoever was selling it.

Commerce, Wolfe City, Campbell and the rest of northern Hunt County are on our route, and we would rather test your water than sell you a system designed for someone else's.

FAQ

Water quality and treatment in Commerce

Your supplier publishes it annually, usually on their website and often with a paper copy on request. It is sometimes called a consumer confidence report, which is why people search for the wrong words.

Taste and smell are mostly not regulated, because they are not health issues. Seasonal source changes, the disinfectant in use, and your own plumbing all affect taste while a report stays entirely clean.

Because it is not a health concern and therefore not a regulated parameter. It is still the number most likely to cost you money, through water heater and appliance life, so ask your supplier or test for it.

No. Sampling is done in the distribution system and at representative taps. Anything between the main and your kitchen, including your own pipework and any filters, is outside its scope.

For filter selection, yes. A carbon stage sized for free chlorine does not remove chloramine as readily, and that matters for aquariums, for some medical equipment and for anyone who dislikes the taste.

Only if there is something to fix. If the report is clean and the complaint is taste at the kitchen tap, a point of use cartridge does the job for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the maintenance.

Flush it properly. Run every cold tap for several minutes, then the hot, and empty and refill any filter housings. Water that has stood for months is stale regardless of how good the supply is.

Yes, and that is the only test that describes what comes out of your taps. It is also the right basis for choosing treatment, since equipment specified from a citywide average often solves nothing.
