Fill points and discharge arrangements for working vehicles.
About this serviceGreater Austin
Mobile washing is a good living out here, and it has two plumbing problems its operators are rarely told about: where the clean water comes from, and where the dirty water is allowed to go. Both have simple answers and both carry real consequences when they are got wrong.

A tank filled from a hose is a cross connection waiting for a pressure drop. The hose end sits in the tank, below the water level, and if the supply pressure falls the tank contents are what get drawn back down the line.
Two acceptable arrangements. Keep the hose end permanently above the tank's rim so there is a physical gap that water cannot bridge, which is the cheapest and most reliable answer. Or fit the correct backflow device at the fill point and have it tested on its schedule.
If you are filling at a customer's tap, the responsibility still travels with you, because it is your hose in your tank. Carry a short fill assembly with protection built into it rather than relying on whatever bib you are handed.
Bulk fill stations are worth asking about too. Many systems have a designated filling point with metering and protection, which is both legal and usually cheaper per gallon than a domestic tap.
The rule that matters: wash water is not stormwater. A storm drain runs to a creek or the river with no treatment at all, so soap, oils and whatever came off a livestock trailer go straight into it.
The lawful destinations are the sanitary sewer, with the site's permission and any pretreatment it requires, or containment and removal, or in some cases discharge to vegetated ground away from any drain where the load is genuinely light. Which is acceptable depends on what is in the water: degreasing an engine bay is a different proposition from rinsing dust off a gate.
Practically, that means controlling the water at the job. A berm or a mat, a vacuum recovery for the heavier work, and a plan for where the recovered water goes at the end of the day. Operators who work fleet yards will need that plan in writing before they are allowed on site anyway.
We fit and test the protection at fill points, plumb a proper fill station at a yard where the volume justifies it, and connect recovery and disposal arrangements to a sanitary point where the site has one. For customers on a well, we will also make sure the fill draw does not leave the household short or short-cycle the pump.
One more thing worth planning for: winter. A tank, a pump and a length of hose on a trailer will freeze harder and faster than anything inside a building, and a cracked pump housing ends a working week. Draining the system on a cold night takes ten minutes and there is no repair that costs less than that.
Llano, Kingsland, Buchanan Dam and Castell are all inside our patch, and a small commercial job can usually be scheduled within the week.
FAQ
Only with the hose end kept above the tank rim or with proper backflow protection fitted at the fill point. A hose lying in the water is a cross connection, and it is the operator's responsibility rather than the property owner's.
To sanitary sewer with permission and any required pretreatment, or into containment for removal. Never to a storm drain, since that is untreated and runs straight to the nearest watercourse.
Discharge to vegetated ground away from any drain is sometimes acceptable for genuinely light work. The heavier the soil load and the more product involved, the less likely that is to be adequate.
Testable assemblies have an annual requirement. An air gap needs no testing, which is one reason it is the arrangement we suggest first for a mobile operation.
Yes, with a meter, the right protection and a hose arrangement that suits the tanks you actually run. It is usually cheaper per load than filling from domestic taps and far easier to keep compliant.
It can, if the draw exceeds what the well delivers and the pump ends up cycling or running dry. Filling from storage rather than directly from the pump solves it, and we can size that properly.
