Sewer Camera Inspection
The eleven month recording on new ground.
About this serviceGreater Houston
The land under most new houses here was pine forest until recently. Clearing takes the trees; it does not always take everything underneath them, and what is left behind decides how the ground behaves for the next ten years.

On a well prepared site, stumps and root balls are removed, organic material is stripped, and fill is placed and compacted in controlled layers. On a rushed one, some of that gets buried instead, and buried wood does what buried wood does: it rots, it loses volume, and the ground above it settles into the space.
The result is not uniform settlement, which a slab handles reasonably well, but localised voids exactly where a root ball used to be. A trench crossing one of those loses its support at a single point, and a sewer lateral laid to a consistent fall develops a dip there over the following few years.
What the household experiences comes much later and looks like an ordinary drain fault: blockages returning every few months at the same point, with nothing anybody is doing to account for them. The pipe is not obstructed so much as holding water where it has lost its support.
Pine also leaves the other legacy. Roots left in the ground decay and the remaining root channels give water a path, which is why a yard on cleared timberland can drain oddly for years, wet in one strip and dry either side of it.
Get a camera down the lateral before the first year closes out. A dip that is forming cannot be seen any other way, and the workmanship period is still open at that point, so the recording either reassures you or hands you a documented defect while somebody else is still responsible for it.
Look at the ground itself after heavy rain. A depression that follows the line of a trench, or an isolated soft patch out in the yard, is worth noting and photographing rather than filling with topsoil and forgetting.
Check where the downspouts discharge. On a lot with disturbed ground and settling backfill, water directed at the wrong place accelerates everything, and moving a downspout discharge is the cheapest preventive measure available.
And watch the meter box and the cleanouts. Both sit on backfill and both sink when it settles, and a cleanout dropping below grade is an early sign that the ground around it is still moving.
Where a dip has formed, the repair is to excavate that section, prepare a proper base and relay it at the right grade. Patching the symptom by clearing it repeatedly is the expensive path, because the pipe is not blocked so much as holding water by design.
Where several sections are affected, lining is worth pricing, though it is worth understanding that a liner follows the shape of the host pipe: it deals with cracks and roots, and it does not lift a sagging section back into grade.
We camera new builds in their first year at a flat rate, provide the recording and a written summary a builder can act on, and do the repairs where they are needed.

FAQ
Because a dip forming over decayed timber gives no sign until it catches something. Doing it before the first year closes is what keeps the cost with the builder rather than with you.
Because what was buried is not uniform. A stump or root ball left in place loses volume as it rots, producing a void in one spot rather than gentle settlement across the lot.
A blockage returning to the same spot points at the shape of the pipe rather than at anything being flushed. Clearing it each time treats the result; the low section stays there and keeps collecting.
Photograph it and note where it is. It may be a decayed root ball, a settling trench or a leak, and those are three different conversations. Do not simply top it up with soil.
Not really. A liner follows the shape of the pipe it is inside, so it solves cracks and root entry and it does not restore grade. A sagging section has to be excavated and relaid.
Move any downspout discharging onto disturbed ground away from the house, check the cleanout and the meter box are still at grade, and keep the recording from the camera run with your warranty paperwork.
