Main Water Line Repair
Service lines melted or weakened by heat.
About this serviceGreater San Antonio
Hill country fire seasons keep getting taken more seriously, and the plumbing consequences are not widely understood. A fire does not only burn what it touches: it can leave a water system that looks intact and is not safe to drink from.

The obvious damage is physical. Plastic service pipe near the surface melts, meter boxes and their contents are destroyed, exposed lines to tanks and outbuildings fail, and a pump left running against a burned-off line empties a tank into the ground.
The less obvious problem is contamination. When plastic pipe and fittings are heated severely, they can release compounds into the water inside them, and where a system loses pressure during a fire, contaminated water and smoke can be drawn back into the pipework. This has been documented after major fires elsewhere, and the practical consequence is straightforward: water in a burned or heat-affected building should not be assumed safe simply because it is running clear.
Loss of pressure matters on its own too, because a system that has been depressurised needs flushing and, depending on the supplier's guidance, testing before it goes back into normal use.
Do not use the water for drinking, cooking, ice or brushing teeth until somebody competent has said it is fine, and follow whatever your supplier advises, since they will know what happened to the distribution system.
Have the service line and meter assessed rather than just turned back on. A melted plastic service under a driveway can hold pressure for a while and fail later.
Expect the treatment equipment to need attention. Filters, softener resin and any membrane in a heat-affected building should be assumed compromised: they are designed to hold contaminants, which is exactly the problem here.
On a property with a well, check the head, the wiring and the pressure tank before energising anything, and test the water. A well head that has been through fire can admit debris and surface contamination that no amount of running will clear.
Where a building is being rebuilt, there is a decision worth making deliberately: pipe run at depth, in conduit or in materials that tolerate heat better, and a service route that is not the first thing to go next time.
Preparation is mostly about water being available and about not making things worse. Know where the shutoffs are. Keep any exposed plastic protected or buried. If there is storage on the property, a connection a truck can draw from is worth arranging with the local department in advance rather than during an event.
We assess and repair service lines, wells and treatment after a fire, and we will say plainly when something is outside our scope and needs testing rather than a plumber's opinion.
Fischer, Canyon Lake, Startzville and Wimberley are all a short run, and post-fire work goes to the front of our schedule.
FAQ
Do not assume so. Heat-affected plastic pipe can release compounds into the water, and a system that lost pressure can draw contamination in. Follow your supplier's guidance and get it checked before drinking or cooking.
Yes, and it needs looking at rather than leaving. Plastic components that were heated can fail later under pressure, and the damage is often not visible from above.
Assume so in a heat-affected building. Their job is to hold what they have removed, which makes them the last thing you want to keep in place afterwards.
Check the head, the wiring and the tank before switching anything on, and test the water. A fire-damaged well head can let debris and surface contamination in, and running it will not resolve that.
Follow the supplier's instructions where one is issued, and work from the fixture nearest the service outward, cold before hot, with filters removed and replaced afterwards. Ask first rather than guessing.
Know your shutoffs, protect or bury exposed plastic, and if you have storage on the property, arrange in advance how the fire service could draw from it. Those three are worth more than anything done during an event.
