Main Water Line Repair
Supply lines planned around a silo's curved interior framing.
About this serviceCentral Texas
A retired grain silo makes for a striking, unconventional home, and around Burlington a handful of them have gone that route. The curved metal walls that made the structure work for grain storage create real plumbing challenges nobody faces in a standard house.

A conventional house runs supply and drain lines through flat stud walls without much thought. A silo's curved metal skin offers nothing equivalent, and every run has to be planned around that reality.
Interior framing, built independently of the silo's curved shell, is where plumbing actually belongs. Most silo conversions build a conventional stud framework inside the metal skin, and that inner framing carries the plumbing exactly like it would in any house.
Plan plumbing runs and fixture locations before the interior framing goes in, not after. Retrofitting a wet wall into a silo's finished interior is at least as disruptive as it would be in a conventional house, with the added complication of working around a curved perimeter.
Multi-level silo conversions need plumbing planned floor by floor. A tall silo divided into levels has to route supply and drain vertically through a central core or a planned chase, since there is no attic or crawlspace to fall back on for routing between levels.
Two details matter enough to call out specifically, because both are easy to underestimate on a structure this unusual.
The foundation slab, often a repurposed grain storage floor, needs proper penetrations for supply and drain lines. This requires the same care as any slab penetration, cutting cleanly, sealing properly, and confirming the existing floor's construction before assuming it behaves like a standard residential slab.
Plumbing vents need to terminate properly through a metal roof, which is a different detail than a standard shingled roof. Getting a weathertight vent penetration through corrugated metal roofing takes the right fittings and flashing approach, not an improvised solution.
Water heater placement and venting need particular attention in a tall, narrow structure. The vertical layout common to silo conversions affects both where a heater can reasonably go and how its own venting works within that shape.
None of this makes a silo a bad choice for a home. It simply means the plumbing has to be designed for the shape that's actually there, rather than adapted from a standard house plan after the fact.
Bring us the conversion plans before interior framing starts and we will lay out where plumbing needs to run, floor by floor if the structure has levels.
We cover Burlington, Buckholts and the rest of Milam County, and unconventional structure conversions are work we take on with real interest.
FAQ
Not practically. Interior framing built independently of the curved metal shell is where plumbing belongs, the same way it would in a conventional house's stud walls.
Before interior framing goes in, not after. Retrofitting a wet wall into a finished silo interior is at least as disruptive as in a conventional house, complicated further by the curved perimeter.
It needs planning floor by floor, routed vertically through a central core or a planned chase, since a tall silo has no attic or crawlspace to fall back on for routing between levels.
Often yes, since it may be a repurposed grain storage floor. It needs the same careful penetration work as any slab, but confirming the existing floor's actual construction first matters more than assuming it's standard.
Yes, a weathertight vent penetration through corrugated metal roofing needs the right fittings and flashing approach, different from a standard shingled roof detail.
This needs particular attention given the tall, narrow layout common to these structures, which affects both placement options and how the unit's own venting works within that shape.
