The tower on the edge of town is not decoration and it is not storage for a rainy day. It is what sets the water pressure in every house here, and understanding that answers most of the pressure questions people ask us.

How a tower sets your pressure

Water pressure from an elevated tank is a function of height. The water level in the tower sits a certain distance above your house, and that height alone produces the pressure at your tap. Pumps fill the tower; the tower supplies the town.

Height above your house, not a pump running somewhere, is what produces the pressure at your tap.

That is why pressure in a tower town is so stable. It does not surge when a pump starts or sag every time somebody else runs a bath, because the tank is a buffer between demand and the pumps. It also means your pressure depends on where your house sits: the lower end of town has more of it than the higher end, permanently.

It also means the town has a few hours of water in hand if the power goes off, which is a genuine advantage of the arrangement and the reason so many small systems are built this way.

When it changes

A tower being drained for inspection or painting is the usual reason for a noticeable change, and systems generally run on pumps directly during that period. Pressure then behaves differently: less steady, more affected by demand, sometimes lower. It is temporary, it is normally announced, and it is not a fault in your house.

A sudden drop everywhere at once belongs to the system: a broken main, or the fill pumps not keeping up. Report that one and it will be dealt with. A drop in one house belongs to that house, and the short list of causes is always the same three: a valve somebody never opened fully after a repair, a regulator reaching the end of its life, or decades of deposit inside old pipe.

Two gauges settle it in two minutes. Read yours at an outside tap, ask a neighbour to read theirs, and compare. Matching numbers mean the town is delivering what it delivers and nothing in your house is at fault. A low reading at your tap alone puts the cause between the meter and your fixtures, which is where we come in.

Your side of the meter

On a steady system like this, most pressure complaints turn out to be flow rather than pressure: old galvanised pipe with a narrowed bore, a clogged aerator, a partly closed stop under a sink. Pressure is what pushes; flow is what arrives. A gauge tells us which conversation we are having.

The other half is the opposite problem. Houses at the low end of town can sit high enough to be hard on fittings, and a regulator is worth fitting where the number justifies it.

Celeste, Wolfe City, Campbell and Greenville are all a short run for us. The gauge comes out first on any pressure call, before anybody discusses equipment.

FAQ

Pressure and supply in Celeste

Elevation. The tower sets the pressure by height above your house, so a property on higher ground has less of it, permanently. It is the system working as designed rather than a fault.

Most likely the tower was out of service for inspection or maintenance and the town was running on pumps. Pressure is less steady during that period and returns to normal afterwards.

No. One fixture is that fixture: an aerator, a cartridge or a stop valve not fully open. Start by unscrewing the aerator and looking at what is in it.

Only if the reading says so. Houses at the low end of a tower system can see pressure high enough to be hard on fittings and heaters, and a gauge reading settles it in two minutes.

A tower holds a real volume above the town, so supply usually continues for a while without pumping. Use less rather than more during an outage and it lasts longer for everyone.

Rarely worth it. That is a bore problem rather than a pressure problem, and pushing harder through a narrowed pipe gains very little. Replacing the restricted section is the fix.
