On a remote tract, a conventional septic system can cost more than the cabin standing on it. Waterless toilets are a genuine alternative and they are not a compromise when chosen properly. What they are not is a way to avoid thinking about drainage.

What the two types actually do

They solve the same problem in completely different ways, and the right choice depends far more on how the place is used than on the brochure.

Composting units separate and dry. Liquid goes one way, solids sit with a bulking material and break down slowly. They need ventilation, they need managing, and a unit that is undersized for the number of people using it will not keep up.

Incinerating units burn the waste. Electricity or propane, a bowl liner per use, and ash to empty. They need power and a flue, they cost more to run, and they suit intermittent use very well because nothing is left decomposing between visits.

Both still need a vent and a route for what they produce. Composting units produce liquid that has to go somewhere legitimate. That is the part most often overlooked when somebody buys one online.

Occupancy pattern decides it. A weekend cabin suits an incinerating unit. A place lived in for weeks at a time suits a properly sized composting system. Guessing wrong produces a unit that smells or one that is always out of service.

The half nobody plans for

Removing the toilet from the equation removes maybe a third of the problem. The sink, the shower and the washing machine carry on producing water every day.

Greywater still has to be disposed of properly. It is not clean and it cannot simply run out of a pipe onto the ground. There are legitimate ways to handle it and they involve design rather than a trench somebody dug.

Volume is the thing people underestimate. A single shower produces more water than a waterless toilet saves in a week. Sizing the greywater arrangement against real use is the whole job.

Kitchen waste is the hardest part. Grease and food solids make kitchen water the least suitable for simple disposal, and it usually needs handling separately from the bathroom.

Do the arithmetic before ruling out a septic system. Once a compliant greywater arrangement is designed and built, the gap between that and a small conventional system is often smaller than expected, and the conventional system takes everything.

How a call plays out

Tell us how often the place is used, how many people, and whether there is power at the building. Those three answers usually point at one option without much argument.

Trinity, Groveton, Onalaska and the surrounding parts of Trinity County are on our round. We plumb the water side and the greywater side of these cabins, we will tell you honestly when a small conventional system beats the off-grid route on cost, and we work on tracts where the nearest main is miles away.

FAQ

Off-grid sanitation questions from Trinity

Waterless systems have a recognised place, and what matters is that the installation is approved and that liquid waste and greywater are handled compliantly. It is worth confirming with the county before buying a unit.

Incinerating, usually. Nothing is left decomposing between visits, which is exactly the failure mode of a composting unit used intermittently. It does need power or propane and a flue.

You still need a compliant way to dispose of greywater, which is designed rather than improvised. A single shower produces more water than the toilet ever saved, and it cannot simply run onto the ground.

A correctly sized, properly ventilated unit does not. Ones that do are almost always undersized for the number of people using them, or have a ventilation problem.

Sometimes, and less often than people expect. Once a compliant greywater arrangement is built, the gap narrows, and a conventional system handles everything in one installation.

Kitchen water is the hardest to dispose of simply because of grease and food solids, and it usually has to be handled separately from bathroom greywater. It is worth designing in from the start.
