Whole House Water Filtration

About this serviceGreater Austin
Boil water notices are a routine part of living on a system that is being repaired and extended at the same time. The notice itself is well explained every time. What almost nobody is told is what to do inside the house afterwards, and that is the part that decides whether you are still drinking last week's water in a fortnight.

A notice is precautionary far more often than it is a response to anything found in the water. Knowing which kind you are in tells you how careful to be.
Most notices follow a loss of pressure. A main break, a pump failure or heavy draw during a fire can drop pressure far enough that the system cannot be assumed sealed. The notice goes out because contamination becomes possible, not because it has been detected.
Some follow planned work. Tie ins for new development around Elgin mean sections of main are opened and reconnected, and the standard procedure afterwards is a notice until sampling clears.
It applies to more than drinking. Ice, brushing teeth, washing produce, pets and coffee machines, all of them use unheated water. Dishwashers on a hot sanitising cycle are usually acceptable, and handwashing with soap is fine.
The notice ends when the utility says so, not when the water looks clear. Clarity was never the test, and water that ran cloudy through the whole event may have been perfectly safe.
Very little of this needs a plumber. It does need doing in the right order, and a couple of items are the ones people forget every time.
Turn the ice maker off, do not just stop using it. It carries on making ice from unheated supply, and that ice stays in the bin long after the notice lifts. Switch it off and empty the bin now rather than remembering in a week.
Boil properly or use bottled. A rolling boil for the time the notice states, then cool it in a covered container. Filter jugs and refrigerator filters do not make water microbiologically safe and should not be treated as an alternative.
Leave the water heater alone. There is no need to drain it or turn it off, and a tank of hot water is useful. Just do not drink from the hot tap, which is good practice regardless of any notice.
Note when it started. If you are running a food business, a rental or a childcare setting, the dates and what you did about them are the record you will be asked for later.
This is the part that gets skipped. Your pipes, your heater and your appliances are holding water from the event, and the utility clearing the main does not clear any of that.
Flush the cold taps first, and give it time. Start at the tap nearest where the supply enters and work outward, several minutes each, until the water is cold and steady. That is you replacing what is standing in your own pipework.
Then run the hot side through. A tank holds forty or fifty gallons of water from before the notice. Running the hot taps until the tank has turned over is what actually clears it.
Replace the filter cartridges. Point of use filters, refrigerator filters and whole house cartridges have been collecting whatever came through and are the one place a problem can sit after everything else is clean. This is not a sales line, it is the genuine weak point.
Dump three batches of ice. Then clean the bin. Ice made during the event looks identical to ice made afterwards, which is exactly the problem.
Clean the aerators. A main break pushes sediment and rust along the line, and it collects in the screens at every tap. Ten minutes with a spanner restores the flow people otherwise report as low pressure a month later.
If your water has come back dirty, weak, or full of air after a notice, tell us how long it has been that way. Days is a house problem and worth a visit. Hours is usually the system settling down.
Elgin, Bastrop, Manor and the rest of Bastrop County are on our route. We will happily talk you through the flushing order on the phone for nothing, and we come out when the problem is in your pipework rather than the main.
FAQ
Usually not. Most are precautionary after a pressure loss or planned work on the main, issued because contamination becomes possible. Detection is the rarer case and is normally stated plainly.
Yes, for adults and older children. Keep it out of the mouth, and bathe small children with care or use boiled water for washing faces. Handwashing with soap is fine.
No. Those filters are for taste, chlorine and sediment, not microbiological safety. During a notice the filter is not protection, and afterwards it is the cartridge most worth replacing.
Switch it off at the start and empty the bin. When the notice lifts, discard the next three batches and wipe out the bin before going back to normal.
No. Leave it running and do not drink from the hot tap. Once the notice lifts, run the hot taps long enough to turn the tank over and it clears itself.
Several minutes per tap, cold side first, nearest the supply entry outwards, until the water runs cold and steady. In a larger house on a long run that can take longer than you would expect.
Air in the lines clears itself within a day or so. Discolouration or grit that persists for several days is usually sediment caught in your own pipework or aerators, and that we can sort out.
Keep dated records of the notice and what you did, change filters on any dispensing equipment, and flush and sanitise ice machines properly. Health inspectors ask about the equipment, not the notice.
