Plumbers in Donna, Texas

A packing shed uses more water in six weeks than most businesses use in a year, and all of it touches food. That combination makes the plumbing both high volume and high consequence, and it has to be ready before the first trailer arrives.

Potable water, in quantity

Water that contacts produce has to be of drinking quality, and that applies to every point in the shed: the dump tank, the wash line, the hydrocooler, the final rinse. It is not a question of which stage is last.

The volume is the part that catches new operations out. Hydrocooling and dump tanks move water continuously during a run, and a service sized for a warehouse will not deliver it. Work out the peak draw with every line running rather than the average over a day, and size the supply and any storage for that number.

Where the shed draws from a well, the same applies with testing on top: the supply has to be demonstrably potable, not assumed to be, and the testing record is part of the operation's paperwork rather than a plumbing detail.

Temperature matters in the other direction here. Cooling water is chilled rather than heated, and the plumbing has to deal with condensation on cold lines in Valley humidity, which means insulation that actually stays in place in a wet environment.

Dosing, cross connections and where the water goes

Sanitiser dosed into wash water is the highest risk connection in the building. A chemical injection point on a potable line needs protection that makes reverse flow impossible, it needs to be the right device for the hazard, and it needs testing rather than assuming. Inspectors go to it first and they are right to.

Drainage is the other half and it is a solids problem as much as a water one. Soil, leaves, wax and fruit fragments all end up in the drain, and a line designed for washroom waste blocks within a week of a season starting. What works is trench drainage with removable baskets, generous falls, cleanouts everywhere, and somebody whose job it is to clear the catches through the shift.

Where the wash water goes depends on volume and content, and it is a question to settle with the utility before the season rather than during it. High volume discharge, or discharge carrying solids and sanitiser residue, may need pretreatment, a permit, or both.

Never route it to a storm inlet. That is the failure with the most serious consequences and it happens by accident, when a yard drain nobody checked turns out to be connected to the wrong system.

A season that arrives all at once

These buildings sit quiet and then run flat out, which produces two predictable failures. Dry traps and stagnant water in lines that have stood for months, and equipment that worked when it was shut down and does not when it is started.

The pre-season visit is therefore not optional: flush every line thoroughly, refill every trap, prove the backflow devices and get them tested, run the drainage with water before produce is in it, and check that the hand washing stations work and have hot water.

Do it early enough to fix what it finds. A fortnight before the season is useful; the day before the first trailer arrives is not.

And plan for failure during the run, because a shed cannot stop. Know which lines can be isolated, keep the drainage cleanable while operating, and have the numbers of whoever answers at three in the morning, since that is when a packing line runs.

Staffing matters as much as hardware. The person who cleared the drain catches last season is frequently not there this season, so whatever the routine is needs writing down and showing rather than assumed as knowledge that stayed in the building.

How we work with sheds here

We do pre-season commissioning, backflow installation and testing, trench drainage and jetting, supply sizing and storage, and hot water for wash-up and hand stations.

During a season we work around the run rather than through it, and we answer at night because that is when the work happens.

FAQ

Packing shed plumbing in Donna

Any water contacting produce does, at every stage rather than only the final rinse. On a well supply that means demonstrating it with testing, and keeping the records with the operation's paperwork.

Size for the peak with every line running rather than the daily average. Storage filled between peaks is usually the practical answer, since upsizing a service is slow and expensive.

A device appropriate to the hazard, installed correctly and tested rather than assumed. It is the highest risk connection in the building and the first thing an inspector looks at.

They are taking solids as well as water. Trench drainage with removable baskets, real falls and cleanouts throughout, plus somebody clearing the catches during the shift, is what actually holds up.

That is a conversation with the utility before the season, since volume, solids and sanitiser residue may require pretreatment or a permit. What it must never reach is a storm inlet.

A fortnight at least, so there is time to fix what it finds. Flushing stagnant lines, refilling traps, testing backflow devices and running the drainage with water are all straightforward until they are done on the morning of the first delivery.

Condensation on chilled lines in high humidity. It needs insulation that stays intact in a wet environment, and it is worth doing properly because the drips end up on floors people work on.

Yes, around the run rather than through it, and at night if that is when the line stops. A shed in season cannot wait for a daytime appointment.
