Finding out what you have

Everything starts with the data plate. On a water heater it is a sticker on the side carrying the brand, the model number and the serial number, and the serial usually encodes the month and year of manufacture. Photograph it now and keep the picture somewhere you will find it, because that sticker is unreadable by the time the unit is leaking and the space around it is wet.

With the brand and model you can search the manufacturer's site and the federal recall database. Recalls have covered heaters, pressure relief valves, flexible connectors, push fit fittings and whole ranges of supply hoses, so it is not only the big appliance worth checking.

Age matters as much as recall status. A tank heater has a design life, and a unit that has passed it is not defective, it is finished. Knowing the manufacture date turns that from a guess into a fact.

What a recall or a warranty actually pays

A recall remedy is usually a repair kit, a replacement part or a replacement unit, arranged through the manufacturer. Labour is a separate question and often is not included, which surprises people who expected an entire replacement installed free.

A standard warranty is narrower still. On most tanks it covers the tank itself for a period and the parts for a shorter one, and it very rarely covers the cost of fitting the replacement, the disposal of the old unit, or any code upgrade the new one triggers.

Two things preserve the claim. Keep the original invoice, because most warranties run from installation rather than manufacture and you will be asked to prove the date. And use a licensed installer, since unlicensed or self-installation voids a good number of manufacturer warranties outright.

If a unit fails early and there is no recall, it is still worth a call to the manufacturer. Defect campaigns that never became formal recalls are common, and a customer service department will sometimes send a part for a known problem without anything being published.

How we handle it

Send us a photograph of the data plate and we will tell you the age, whether anything is outstanding against it, and whether what you are describing matches a known fault for that range. That costs nothing and it occasionally saves the whole job.

Where a claim exists we will fit a manufacturer-supplied part and invoice only the labour, and we will write the invoice so it says plainly what was replaced and why. Where the honest answer is that the unit is simply old, you get told that instead of a warranty story.
